A snow storm has started on 5th December 2016 in North Dakota and originated road blockade, out of whack vehicles and generated an emergency situation at the protest encampment of Standing Rock. The situation caused evacuation of some protesters, including elder persons and people with bad physical condition, and those people who were not well prepared for such kind of severe weather condition. The protesters had been camped out since April 2016 at the Oceti Sakowin camp in a powerful effort to stop construction of 3.7 U.S dollar pipeline supposed to be crossed under the Missouri River. The supposed project was powerfully opposed by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe because their worry that it would destroy sacred sites and its negative effects in getting safe and harmless pure drinking water.

The demonstrators challenged the control of land by the federal government and stressed for the 1851 treaty awarded to them for forever. Thousands of U.S army veterans were mobilized on 4th December 2016 to support the tribe. It has been considered a massive mobilization from Veterans Stand for the Standing Rock. On 5th December 2016, the Army Corps of Engineers had announced that Pipeline Company and their Energy Transfer Partners are unable to proceed forward regarding the project. It is due to the Environmental Impact Statement is blocking powerfully and effectively for working on pipeline. Now, a heavy storm has grounded the protesters at the camp in heavily freezing temperature. The rescue efforts have locked up by a bank and rejected the issuance of funds required by the organizers of veteran event.
