A stunning U-turn has made by the U.S President Donald Trump by claiming he misspoke when he said during the Helsinki summit. He believed Vladimir Putin’s assertion that Russia hadn’t interfered in the U.S Presidential Election 2016. The U.S President faced a barrage of criticism from political opponents but also from various in his own party after his comments in Finland. Some of them are going as far as branding his words treasonous. Donald Trump said he was not convinced Moscow had attempted to tip the election in his favor. He was standing alongside Putin at a press conference following talks between the two leaders on Tuesday. Russian President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial. But, he was speaking with the U.S President Trump sought to clarify his comments.

Trump said that he thought it would have been obvious to observers that he had misspoken. But, he claimed that he had meant to say was he saw no reason why it “wouldn’t”, not “would” be Russia who had interfered in the election. The U.S President went on to insist he had complete faith and support for the intelligence agencies of America. Trump has come under fire in the days since the Helsinki summit, with even Republicans usually supportive of Trump’s policies piling on the pressure. Speaking after the summit, prominent Republican senator John McCain said that joint press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. He also said that Trump had shown he was both “unable” and “unwilling” to stand up to Putin. It is important that clarification from Trump in joint press conference comes amid an ongoing investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
